This year the Smith Family’s “student2student” program continues at GIPS. Twelve grade 5 and 6 students have put their hands up willing to give up 3 afternoons each week for two terms. Twelve mentors from GIPS grade 5 and 6 are teamed up with a buddy from years 3 to 10.
Each mentor makes contact by telephone with their buddy 2 or 3 times a week for 20 minutes during which time the buddy reads a book, assisted by the mentor. They discuss the story and talk about words and sentences over the phone. When the book is finished they are mailed back to the Smith Family and a new one is sent to the mentor and the buddy.
This is a great program giving mentors confidence while helping others who may not be as well advanced in their reading. At the end of the program mentors will receive a certificate of appreciation for their community work.
